Transform Your Energy Through Your Breath
Pranayama is the fourth of the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, also called Raja Yoga; it is a Sanskrit term composed of the words ‘Prana’ and ‘Ayama’. Prana means vital energy which is often translated as ‘breath’ but it refers to something deeper, linked to more subtle energy layers. The word Ayama means control and extension; therefore Pranayama uses breathing to influence the flow of prana in the nadis: energy channels of our body.
With Pranayama techniques the breath is used to unblock, purify and harmonize the body, mind and emotional system.
What to Expect during Pranayama Classes
Each session is customized to suit the individual needs and level of the student, focusing on enhancing physical, emotional, and energetic well-being. The session is structured as follows:
Warm-up: A brief, gentle sequence designed to relax and loosen the muscles, while also preparing the body for movement. This phase helps activate both the respiratory system and the energy flow throughout the body, setting the foundation for deeper work.
Pranayama Techniques: Breathwork techniques are integrated to guide and control the breath, helping to balance the nervous system and improve energy flow. These techniques are selected based on the student’s needs, and each one targets specific areas of the body, mind, or energy system to promote overall well-being. Pranayama can calm the mind, increase focus, or revitalize the body, depending on the techniques used.
Why Pranayama?
Pranayama practice offers numerous benefits, including:
Reducing Anxiety and Stress: by learning to control your breath, you activate the body’s relaxation response, helping to manage stress and calm the nervous system.
Improves Lung Capacity: regular practice can increase lung capacity, making it easier to breathe deeply and efficiently.
Enhances Mental Clarity and Focus: by focusing on the breath, pranayama sharpens concentration, allowing you to approach each moment with clarity.
Balances Emotions: deep, conscious breathing regulates the nervous system, helping to stabilize mood and release emotional tension.
